Backlinks and Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization has roots in the evaluation of backlinks. A long time ago when search engines were being invested, engineers figured out that links going to a website were a good way to figure out the websites most people are interested in. Of course, this metric was prone to abuse very quickly. It did not take long before Internet marketers spammed the Internet with links on many different dormant websites. Today, search engine companies are a lot smarter. As a result, website owners need to be a lot more careful when it comes to the inbound links.

One big factor in backlinks is the page rank. Although page rank is not used as the sole factor to rank a website in search engine results, it does carry significant weight when it comes to links. A website with high page rank can help another website with a link. On the other hand, a website that is brand new will not help very much if a link is given. As a result, quality of the website giving the link counts a lot more today whereas in the past it did not matter at all. As a consequence, quality matters a lot more than quantity.

Today’s search engines are pretty good at figuring out what niche each website is in. That means it can tell if a link is relevant or not to the niche of another website. If the websites are not related at all, then there is a strong possibility that the link is spam and should be ignored. That is why website owners who are on a link building campaign need to make sure that the links are coming from closely related websites. Otherwise all of the effort to create links will not bring much in term of good benefits.

Along with other parts of a SEO campaign such as keyword research, getting good backlinks is critical to getting and maintaining a good ranking for as many relevant keywords as possible. Website owners should concentrate on quality for both their content as well as their SEO. In today’s world, quality is a lot more important than quantity. That is certainly true with links.
